Africa is a chair that embodies a perfect synthesis of structure, form and functionality in a sculpture that enhances the constructive and communicative power of the material. A re-edition of the chair of the same name created by Afra and Tobia Scarpa in 1975, Africa is a timeless project that celebrates the ancient work of the cabinetmaker and the recovery of wood in design.
The structure in solid canaletto walnut with a thin rectangular section shows all the expressiveness of the veneer in the progression of the thicknesses that compose it, while the seat is masterfully curved and covered in leather or fabric. The backrest is the true protagonist of the chair: worked as a single piece, and then divided and finished in two mirror-like parts, it features delicate manual roughing and sanding processes from which the layers of different woods emerge, creating wonderful chromatisms thanks to the thin dark threading. The backrest and rear legs are joined only at the base, giving rise to a wide slit that guarantees elasticity to the structure, evoking a totemic image.
